Westwood
Ski and Sports Club and the International Gravity Sports Association
(IGSA) are pleased to announce the start of the 2004 California Championship gravity
racing series, with races at West LA College for skateboard, inline
skate, classic luge (buttboard), street luge, and gravity bikes, (with
help from GBA).
All
races will count towards the IGSA world rankings. There will be a
variety of awards and prizes at each race, and at the end of the series
there will be special series awards for the top point-getters (dropping
each racer's worst result in each discipline). Sponsors include Turner
Downhill Wheels,
Bones Bearings, Ed Economy Longboards
and
Kryptonics Wheels. |

SCHEDULE
|
Each
of the dates will have racing for several sports and practice available
at a reduced price for the sports not competing on that date. The
events will take place rain or shine, but if it rains the schedules may
change (for example a tight slalom might be postponed for rain, but luge
would race in the rain).
The season starts on Sunday June 13 at West LA College, with a skateboard
tight slalom race on B Street and luge (all kinds), downhill inline,
downhill skateboard, and gravity bikes on C Street. D Street will
be available for slalom practice, |

Dave Rogers (X games gold medalist) at West LA
College. Looking good! |

DISCIPLINES:

Slalom (with cones): The lower speed version of this event is popular in parks,
with
cones spaced 1 or 2 meters apart in a straight line. We set our courses on bigger
hills, with longer distances between cones, offset turns, and higher speeds. The
sensation is much like alpine skiing or snowboarding.
Skates and gates slalom: This is a close simulation of alpine ski racing's slalom
event. The turns are marked with hinged gates, about 5 feet tall, which the racer
knocks down as she passes. Speeds are up to 25 mph, and the racer must make quick,
precise turns. It's a really exciting event!
Giant slalom: A higher speed event, which can satisfy your need for speed, while
also
including technical turning skills. Courses tend to be longer than slalom courses,
and include tucking. Super G is a higher speed variant of giant slalom.
Downhill: The fastest event, made famous in the US by the ESPN X Games.
